Important Update: Little Enrolment Temporarily on Hold

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Halifax is currently operating with limited organizational resources while continuing to experience exceptionally high demand for our one-to-one mentoring programs.

At this time, our programs are at capacity, and a significant number of children and youth are already waiting to be matched. In order to responsibly support the families and volunteers currently engaged in our programs, we have made the difficult decision to pause the intake of new Littles.

This decision is rooted primarily in our commitment to safety, quality, and appropriate match support. With our current resources, we are not able to responsibly expand enrolment while maintaining the high standards of service our families deserve.

This pause is not expected to be short-term. Enrolment will remain on hold until we are confident that we have the capacity and resources required to sustainably accept new applications. The situation is being reviewed on an ongoing basis, and updates will be shared here as they become available.

During this period, we are also reviewing and improving our enrolment processes, including the development of a fully digital application experience designed to be more accessible and efficient for families and caregivers when enrolment reopens.

Thank you for your understanding and for supporting mentoring across Greater Halifax.

HOW IT WORKS

When applying for our programs, a Little must be at least 7 years old.

An Enrollment Coordinator will work with you and your child to review your situation and determine how a mentor would be of benefit. Factors that would be considered regarding your child’s needs include:

  • Parent or guardian support
  • Adult involvement other than the parent(s) or guardian(s)
  • Peer relationships
  • School performance
  • Involvement in community activity
  • Living environment
  • Ability to form and maintain a healthy, safe relationship
  • Ability to perform self-care

If your child meets the above criteria, please complete the Child Inquiry Form as a first step in enrolling in our programs.
